It has been 12 years since our lives were changed forever when Hurricane Katrina decided to change course and head for Louisiana and Mississippi's coasts.  I am reminded with current events how powerful the forces of nature can be.  Pictures of these catastrophic events serve as a reminder. 

I evacuated our home in St. Bernard with my family.  Many people stayed behind, including my friend Errol Schultz, who shot these photos of flooded neighborhoods in Chalmette.

We were able to get back home after 5 agonizing weeks of waiting and wondering whether we had a home to come back to.  Of course almost all of us did not.  I shot these images on the first day back.  We were in awe of the incredible devastation.  We saw houses on slabs moved to the middle of the streets.  Cars stacked on roofs and atop other vehicles.  It was an utter feeling of hopelessness. 

But there were many signs of hope during and after the storm.  Those who brought aid to those of us dealing with the aftermath.  Help came in many forms from many different sources.  Most notably was neighbor helping neighbor.  Strangers helping strangers.  The outpouring of love and sympathy that came from the far reaches of our great nation and beyond.  I am certain this will be the case in Texas, where the suffering is only beginning there.  Please reach out to help our neighbors and do whatever you can to provide assistance, no matter how small.  I remember relying on donations of food, clothing, water and basic necessities from many different resources, and felt blessed for having them.  Let's keep Houston and all those affected in our prayers.

Dee Wild - While so much was lost during Katrina and now Harvey, there will still be many miracles that will come out of the disaster. As Americans, we will once again go to the aid of our brothers and sisters in Texas and Louisiana. They will remain in our thoughts, prayers and actions. Thank you Chuck for capturing our world through your lens!

Carol LeBlanc - I remember this well and my heart aches for LA. We have had our share of Mother Nature's wrath. The good thing out of this is I have met some awesome 504's that have become extended family! ❤️

Dianne - You are so right. Our family and friends from near and far helped us during that terrible time 12years ago. Now is our time to help out in Texas.
