Self Assignment #2

For this second self-assignment, I tasked myself with finding and photographing interesting shapes and repeating objects. So, on a 15-mile bike ride, I kept an eye out for anything I thought might fit that description.

My plan was to find these items in nature, but I was open to whatever I crossed paths with.

At one point, I even challenged myself to find objects that represented letters in my name. This was not an easy challenge, but I did the best I could considering the material I had to work with. Nature does not produce many right angles.

Interesting is a subjective term. What's interesting to me may not be interesting to you. This is a self-assignment, and only serves the purpose of keeping me in practice and to sharpen my skills and creativity. There is no pressure of pleasing a client, only the self expectation of completing a task.

This exercise may seem elementary to you, but I assure you, it was not. I didn't take my time to set up shots. I forced myself to think on the fly. While riding my bike, I spotted the object, stopped and got off, adjusted the manual settings on the camera (shutter speed and aperture), composed, shot, then moved on. It took discipline and skill to complete the assignment, as it would have if I were working for a client.
