Ideal Portrait Locations

I have photographed in nearly every type of environment you can think of.  I cannot always choose the location where I work.  I have shot weddings in bars, receptions in school gyms, and brides getting ready in locker rooms.  I just try to make the best of it.

These next two images were taken in a small, rather plain, one-room hotel suite with a very unattractive a/c unit.  I moved some furniture around (I seem to do a lot of that) to use the large window to frame the bride with background light.

I don't have a 'favorite' location to shoot.  I like challenges, so I don't mind letting the client decide.  Plus, I like to discover new locations.  However, if I am pressed to chose a location, there are many factors that go into my decision.  If it's a session with a toddler, I have to ask myself, "where would they be most comfortable, and safe?"  For a bride, they have to feel comfortable with where they will be moving around in a dress.  I want a place where the background will lend itself to the type of image I am trying to create. Maybe something with color in the background for a bride, or a rustic setting for a kid in overalls.

I also consider textures and strong lines such as brick or wood, train tracks or fences.  All of these things go through my mind when considering locations.

I don't suggest a place unless I am asked.  I want it to be my clients personal choice, but if they are at a loss or don't really know, then I am ready to make a suggestion.

On a personal note, I want to thank all of you who are taking the time to view these posts.  My family and friends who continue to encourage me to keep going forward.  And to my past students, I am always accessible to you if you have any questions for me.

Remember, in photography, as in life, when opportunities arise, take your best shot.
